Regional Coordinator (RC) - Asia

Rick Kwan

PhD, FHKANM, FAAN

With great enthusiasm and a strong sense of duty, I submit my candidacy for Regional Coordinator, Asia Region, Sigma. Over the past two decades, I have been committed to raising the standards of nursing education, research, and service—values that align closely with Sigma’s mission.

After obtaining my PhD in Nursing from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) in 2016, I began my career as a registered nurse in critical care with the Hospital Authority in Hong Kong (2003–2008), an experience that shaped my dedication to evidence-based and patient-centred practice. I later transitioned to academia, serving as clinical instructor, Assistant Professor, and, ultimately, Professor at Tung Wah College (TWC). Since 2022, I have held the role of Associate Dean (Programmes) at TWC.

My research focuses on elderly care, particularly cognitive health, frailty, physical activity, and digital health technologies. I have led or participated in over 40 funded research projects, securing more than 6.5 million USD in grants. My scholarly contributions encompass nearly 100 articles in peer-reviewed international SCI journals and book chapters, and I have presented at more than 40 international conferences. My work has received five major awards—including the ICT Award for virtual reality therapeutic programmes—and a patent for an innovative intervention, underscoring my commitment to technological progress in nursing. These achievements have not only contributed to academia but also attracted significant media attention.

My leadership within Sigma is both extensive and impactful. As founding President of the Pi Iota At-Large Chapter, I united major nursing schools in Hong Kong and served as Secretary (2016–2018), President-Elect (2018–2020), and President (2021–2023). At regional and international levels, I have served as Secretary for the Asia region, Council Member for the Research and Scholarship Advisory Council (2022–2023), and contributed as an award reviewer and keynote speaker for Sigma. Recent roles include Chair of the Organising Committee for the Sigma Asia Regional Conference (Philippines 2024), Organising Committee Member (Hong Kong 2025), and Asia Region Coordinator (2023–2025), reflecting my dedication to collaboration, capacity building, and enhancing Sigma’s profile in Asia.

Beyond Sigma, I have held leadership positions such as Op-opt Member of Nursing Council of Hong Kong, Council Member of the Hong Kong Association of Gerontology, Associate Editor for leading journals, and specialist/accreditation panellist for the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic & Vocational Qualifications. My service has been recognised by honours including Distinguished Educator in Gerontological Nursing (2018), Outstanding Alumni Award (PolyU, 2022), Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Nursing and Midwifery (2022), Research Excellence Award (TWC, 2023), and Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (2024).

As Regional Coordinator (2023–2025), I have worked to unite Asia chapters through visits to Singapore, the Philippines, and Japan; hosting regional meetings; convening conferences; publishing collaborative research; and organising timely webinars. If elected, I will employ my experience, innovative mindset, and inclusive leadership to further strengthen Sigma’s presence in Asia, foster cross-border collaboration, and empower our nursing community to achieve new heights of excellence and impact.
