Sandra Bibb, DNSc, RN, FFNMRCSI, FAAN, is Owner and Cultural Competence Consultant, Sandra C. Garmon Bibb Consulting, providing education, consultation, and support to groups and organizations focused on increasing self-awareness of cultural views and perspectives; developing positive attitudes towards cultural differences; and creating organizational environments that demonstrate the ability to communicate and interact with individuals, regardless of cultural background.

Dr. Bibb served in the United States Navy as an active-duty nurse and retired at the rank of Captain (0-6) in 2004, after serving three decades in the Armed Forces. While on active duty she established and served in a number of leadership roles where she led interprofessional healthcare teams in the design and delivery of population-based, culturally appropriate care.

After retiring from the Navy Dr. Bibb served in several roles at the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, Maryland from July 2004 to July 2014, to include faculty, Research Director, Department Chair, and Associate Dean. In 2014 she was selected to serve as Dean and Professor, College of Health Professions at Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas. In January 2020 Dr. Bibb left Wichita State University and established Sandra C. Garmon Bibb Consulting in August 2020. 

 

Dr. Bibb also served as a Cultural Competence Consultant from 2007 to 2014, and as a Nurse Scientist Consultant at Quorum IRB from 2012 to 2019. She has over 30 years of experience in senior and executive leadership positions in military, academic, and community settings, and has served on numerous national and international review committees, boards, and task forces.

Dr. Bibb was elected to the Sigma Theta Tau International Board of Directors and served as Director-at-Large from 2015 to 2019. She was elected to the position of President-elect on the Sigma Board for the 2021-2023 biennium and was installed as Sigma’s 35th President for the 2023-2025 biennium. She is a Fellow of the Faculty on Nursing and Midwifery, Royal College of Surgeons Ireland. A Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, she is recognized for her research initiatives and published works related to population health; access to care; and health and healthcare disparities.

Lilian Nuwubaine, MScN, BScN, has dedicated her career to researching, innovating, and educating with an aim to providing the best care for mothers and children in Rwanda, Kenya, Sierra Leone, and her native Uganda. She has published more than 20 articles in high-impact journals focusing on reproductive, maternal, newborn, and adolescent health. Her innovative project, “The Nutrition and Wellness Hub” has assisted thousands of people in underserved communities, equipping them with up-to-date, evidence-based nutrition and wellness information, nutritional assessments, and appropriate interventions. Her vision has been to empower the community to become champions of nutrition advocacy, health promotion, nutrition education, and disease prevention.

As a midwife, Lilian has touched the lives of hundreds of women in under-resourced communities. She is also passionate about educating the next generation of midwives and nurses. Through Aga Khan University, she is an accredited continuous professional development provider and has conducted trainings that have reached thousands of nurses and midwives across Uganda. Additionally, her project “Your Nurse and Midwife on Air” aims to raise the profile of nursing in Uganda and beyond through social media, collaborations and partnerships, and training in advocacy and policy involvement.

Although Lilian Nuwubaine is unable to join us in person at convention, a short excerpt from her presentation will be featured during the second plenary session. Her full 30-minute talk will also be available online. The Episteme Award is sponsored by the Baxter Foundation.

Director, The Focus Area for Compassion and Ethics; The Taskforce for Global Health

Tim Cunningham, DrPH, MSN, RN, FAAN, is Director of the Focus Area for Compassion and Ethics at the Task Force for Global Health, based in Atlanta, Georgia. He serves as Board President of Clowns Without Borders, a nonprofit dedicated to alleviating suffering through laughter. He works with interprofessional teams to promote systemic well-being for healthcare professionals, university staff, researchers, students, and communities, while leading research on  the epidemiology of compassion. Tim’s professional journey began in the performing arts, including theater, clowning, dance, and acrobatics. After training at Dell’Arte International he performed internationally for nearly a decade as a professional actor. His experiences led him to join Clowns Without Borders in 2003.

A transformative experience working as a clown in a pediatric hospital in pre-earthquake Haiti inspired Tim to pursue nursing. He earned his Masters in Clinical Nurse Leadership from the University of Virginia in 2009 and worked as an emergency/trauma nurse at UVA Health, Children’s National Medical Center, and New York-Presbyterian. In 2016, he completed his Doctorate in Public Health at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. Tim is former Vice President and Co-Chief Well-Being Officer for Emory Healthcare, where he built Emory’s inaugural office of wellness, focused on systematic change to support the mental, physical, and professional health of 35,000 employees. 

Tim has co-authored three books on nurse self-care and well-being, plus a children’s book about resilience in the face of Ebola.
