Leadership Succession Committee - Four-Year Term

Jehad O. Halabi

PhD, RN, FTNSS

It is an honor to be selected as a candidate for Sigma’s Leadership Succession Committee. I have over 30 years of experience in nursing education, leadership, and global collaboration—anchored in a lifelong commitment to advancing the profession and mentoring future leaders.

My academic journey began at the University of Jordan, where I graduated with honors, later served as Head of the Nursing Department, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, and Assistant Dean for Development Affairs. I earned an MSc from SUNY Buffalo and a PhD from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), along with certifications in medical education, women’s health, and gerontology. As a scholar from a developing country, I overcame challenges through perseverance, contributing to AIDS prevention projects in Botswana and helping found a $1 million research center on women and gender in Chicago.

I established and coordinated award-winning international exchange programs, including the Swedish SIDA and Linnaeus-Palme initiatives, and led Jordanian-American collaborations for 15 years. These programs earned national and regional recognition, including the Prince Al-Hassan award and honors from the Scientific Society of Arab Nursing Faculties. Over the years, I’ve contributed to nursing education and outreach across 18 countries and served nearly two decades as an external examiner for nursing programs in Sudan. I was a Fulbright Scholar and spoke at the United Nations Headquarters, promoting culturally responsive nursing education. I helped establish Qatar University’s first nursing college and developed its curriculum and committees.

Currently, I serve as Professor of Nursing and Women’s Health at Middle East University in Amman, where I developed the university’s first nursing curriculum and led major academic initiatives. My efforts have been recognized with multiple honors, including recognition as an outstanding alumna by UIC, the University President's Best Teacher Award in Saudi Arabia, and selection among Sigma’s top 100 nurses in the Europe Region for the centenary year. In KSA, I served as Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, chaired accreditation and quality taskforces, oversaw the Nursing Library, and led the Assessment and Evaluation Unit.

I am deeply honored to have been nominated as a Transcultural Nursing Scholar and Fellow by the Transcultural Nursing Society—an affirmation of my extensive work in culturally inclusive healthcare—and chosen to serve a four-year term on Sigma’s Research and Scholarship Advisory Council (RSAC), where I will contribute to scholarly progress within the organization.

My leadership philosophy centers on mentorship, inclusivity, and ethical advancement. I’ve guided faculty, students, and healthcare professionals—many now holding executive roles in government, universities, and health institutions. Through initiatives such as the British Council’s “Women into Senior Leadership” program, I support structured mentorship and policy reform that empowers emerging leaders. I also contribute to the Mentors Special Interest Group within the Transcultural Nursing Society.

As an LSC candidate, I am dedicated to transparent processes, educating delegates on leadership succession, and strengthening Sigma’s future with visionary, diverse leaders. My global perspective, academic leadership, and unwavering passion for nursing position me to contribute meaningfully to this role.

Thank you for considering my candidacy.
