Nurses are professionals—and essential ones at that.
Yet the recent proposal from the U.S. Department of Education to revise federal student aid classifications and continue to omit nursing from the list of recognized “professional degrees” remains gravely disappointing. It reinforces a truth we know too well: nurses are often unseen, undervalued, and left out of decisions that profoundly shape our profession.
And still, we rise.
Nurses anchor the delivery of healthcare. With nearly 30 million nurses globally—including 6 million in the U.S.—we are the largest and most trusted segment of the healthcare workforce. We spend more time with patients than any other provider, and for 23 consecutive years, our profession has been named the most trusted by Gallup Poll respondents.
Our impact is undeniable.
Research consistently shows that safe staffing and strong nursing leadership improve patient outcomes, strengthen communities, and expand access to care, especially in underserved areas where advanced practice nurses fill critical gaps.
Any barrier to education is a barrier to health.
Sigma remains at the forefront, politically aware but never partisan, because advocacy for nursing is essential to global health.
We speak up when decisions threaten to diminish the profession that drives healthcare forward.
And we speak boldly and authentically—challenging misinformation and advancing the truth about nursing’s impact.
We invite you to take action, raise your voice, and share your story. Advancing nursing is something we do better together.
Your voice matters. Your value matters. Your story matters.
- Share YOUR Story with Sigma: Sigma wants to capture your voice, value, and impact. We are calling upon all advanced practice nurse practitioners (APRNs) to take five minutes and share their story RIGHT HERE.
- Sign the Petition: The American Nurses Association has created a petition to send to the U.S. Department of Education. Sign it right now, right HERE.
- Speak up: In your communities,
workplaces, and networks, amplify nursing’s collective voice so the profession is recognized, respected, and valued worldwide. You can start with social media and use #NursingStrong.
Sigma’s mission is not bound by politics; it is driven by the strength, compassion, and leadership of nurses—like YOU—everywhere.
Thank you for your tireless commitment to nursing.
