Happy New Year—Sigma style!
While July marks the midpoint of the calendar year, for Sigma it represents something more meaningful: the start of a new fiscal year and a renewed commitment to our global membership, including you.
On 18 June, the Sigma Board of Directors gathered virtually not simply to review a budget, but to ensure that every decision we make strengthens your experience and supports the impact you have across the nursing profession. The fiscal year 2027 budget and operating plan we approved reflects continued investment in the priorities of Sigma Forward and in the programs, services, and innovations that support you throughout your professional journey. The meeting was, at its core, about you—your needs, your aspirations, and the future you are helping shape.
The Board also affirmed Sigma’s strong financial position as we close the 2025-2026 year ahead of projections. In addition to approving the fiscal year 2027 budget and operating plan, we advanced several initiatives that strengthen our ability to serve you, including continued modernization of our systems and digital infrastructure, the approval of new and expanding chapters, and alignment of next year’s work with Sigma Forward’s priorities. Each of these decisions reflects our commitment to ensuring Sigma remains responsive, sustainable, and positioned to champion the work nurses lead around the world.
This month also marks one year since we launched Sigma Forward, our multi-year strategic framework. As we enter year two, we continue to be inspired by the progress we’ve made together and energized by the opportunities ahead. Sigma Forward is more than a roadmap—it’s a shared promise to preserve what you value most about Sigma while evolving to better support nurses at every stage of their careers.
Central to that promise is enhancing your member experience. That is why we continue to invest in technology, innovation, and digital infrastructure. One of the most visible examples will be a new website launching in August. Many of you contributed through surveys and navigation exercises, and your insights have shaped a website that is more intuitive, accessible, and reflective of our global community. We hope it becomes a resource you are proud to share when someone asks, “What is Sigma?
As we continue building for the future through Sigma Forward, we are also reminded that Sigma’s greatest strength remains its members who Lead Together in communities around the world. This was especially evident last week at the 8th Sigma European Regional Conference in the stunning city of Kuopio, Finland.

Over three days, 230 Sigma members from 30 countries, representing experienced and emerging leaders, educators, practitioners, and researchers, came together to share their research, exchange ideas, and explore the future of nursing leadership and practice. This year’s conference, hosted by the University of Eastern Finland and the Alpha Beta Nu Chapter, explored themes focused on the future of nursing leadership and practice; health, safety, and sustainability; and teaching, technology, and innovation. The energy, insights, and collaboration throughout the event were truly inspiring. The conversations reinforced the essential role nurses play in shaping the future of healthcare and highlighted the leadership and scholarship that define Sigma’s global community. We are grateful to the members of the conference planning committee for extending such a warm tervetuloa (welcome). The 9th European Regional Conference will be held in Coimbra, Portugal, in June 2028
The Sigma Asia Regional Conference, 27-28 October 2026, is also open for abstracts. Find out more here.
Soon, we will gather again at the 37th International Nursing Research Congress in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, 16-18 July. Whether you’re presenting your research, attending educational sessions, reconnecting with colleagues, or experiencing Congress for the first time, we look forward to learning, sharing, growing, and leading together.
As we begin this new fiscal year, celebrate one year of Sigma Forward, and prepare for Congress, we are energized by the momentum across Sigma, an impressive global community of nurses and leaders. Every day, Sigma members advance research, lead change, mentor new colleagues, and strengthen their communities around the world. You are the reason Sigma Forward exists, and you’re the reason we continue to move boldly into the future.
Thank you for your leadership, engagement, and commitment to our shared mission. Together, we are moving Sigma—and nursing—forward.
