New Sigma book is a roadmap for healthcare professionals to care for those with disability

INDIANAPOLIS—Disability is a universal aspect of the human experience. Sigma Theta Cover of Delivering Quality Healthcare for People With DisabilityTau International Honor Society of Nursing’s (Sigma’s) newest title, Delivering Quality Healthcare for People With Disability, provides a road map for nurses, nursing students, and other healthcare professionals to deliver quality healthcare for individuals with disability. From social determinants of health to disability models to an understanding of different types of disability, author Suzanne C. Smeltzer helps nurses take the lead in redefining education and addressing the needs of people with disability.

One in four people in the US has one or more disabilities, making the population of people with disability the largest minority group in the country. “Healthcare for many people with disabilities is of poor quality and fraught with barriers to care,” author Suzanne C. Smeltzer, EdD, RN, ANEF, FAAN, said. “Many national and international organizations have called for the healthcare professions to better prepare their graduates to care for individuals with disability. This book is intended to address those calls.”
