Sigma Nursing announces the Dorothy Brooten Permanent Fund establishing a new nursing research small grant

INDIANAPOLIS —The Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma) today announced the establishment of a new permanent fund named for and endowed by renowned nurse researcher Dorothy Brooten, RN, PhD, FAAN. The Dorothy Brooten Permanent Fund, to be managed by the Sigma Foundation for Nursing, intends to fund a nursing research small grant each year beginning in the 2023-2024 grant cycle.

Dorothy-Brooten_150x150Dr. Brooten, who received her first research grant from Sigma, is well respected for her four-decade career in nursing research. She established this grant with first-hand knowledge that small research grants are essential in developing science and nurse scientists. In her words, “These grants provide direction for further research, provide investigators with confidence that others believe in their research, and provide opportunities to pilot methods, problem solve hurdles, develop teams, work with Institutional Review Boards, and publish and present study results.”

About the new permanent fund and research grant, Sigma President Richard Ricciardi, PhD, CRNP, FAANP, FAAN, said, “Dr. Dorothy Brooten’s gift exemplifies leadership by example as a world-class nurse researcher paving the way for other nurse scientists to follow in her footsteps. I extend my sincere thanks for her foresight and generosity, and I look forward to the impact this new grant will make.”

Thanks to its donors and grant partners, the Foundation provides annual funding for more than US $360,000 in research grants, leadership education grants, membership subsidies, and support for Sigma initiatives.
