Premier Nurse Leadership Academy Made Possible Through Sigma's Long-Standing Partnership with Johnson & Johnson Global Community Impact
INDIANAPOLIS — Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma) is pleased to announce the participants in the 2018-2019 cohort of the Maternal-Child Health Nurse Leadership Academy-Africa (MCHNLA Africa). Nurses and midwives in the cohort represent the countries of Ghana, Malawi, South Africa, Swaziland, and Uganda, and will participate in the MCHNLA Africa, which begins in April 2018.
About the Maternal-Child Health Nurse Leadership Academy
Since its inception in 2004, Sigma’s Maternal-Child Health Nurse Leadership Academy, in partnership with Johnson & Johnson Global Community Impact, has prepared more than 150 nurses and midwives who lead healthcare teams toward improving maternal-child health in communities across Canada, the United States, and Africa. Through leadership lessons, self-assessment, interdisciplinary team development, and project management, the 18-month mentored leadership development program challenges nurses to implement change within their organizations.
Partnered with a nurse mentor, mentees are led through a curriculum designed to develop leadership in action through projects that improve the overall health of mothers, babies, and children up to age 5. Goals include:
- Influencing maternal-child healthcare practices within varied settings, serving hundreds to tens of thousands of mothers and children
- Improving maternal-child health mortality and morbidity rates through nursing leadership
- Growing and empowering nurses for leadership in prenatal care for rural clinics
- Benefiting facilities through the retention of experienced nurses and midwives
“These new participants in the Maternal-Child Health Nurse Leadership Academy-Africa have the ability to change the course of healthcare in Africa,” said Sigma President Beth Baldwin Tigges, PhD, RN, PNP, BC. “Sigma is grateful to Johnson & Johnson Global Community Impact for their investment in these nurse and midwife leaders, and the improvements they will bring to mothers and children in Africa.”
