Sigma Celebrates Nurses Week 2026: Leading with Skill, Driven by Compassion

INDIANAPOLIS – In the fast-paced world of healthcare, much of nurses’ essential work often goes unseen. This Nurses Week, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma) is proud to recognize not only the clinical expertise that defines the profession, but also the compassion and humanity nurses bring to their work every day.

Across countries, cultures, and care settings, Sigma nurses are shaping the future of healthcare by advancing research, leading systems change, mentoring the next generation, and advocating for healthier communities worldwide. They serve as clinicians, researchers, educators, leaders, and policy influencers—each role critical to improving health outcomes on a global scale.

“This week is a powerful reminder that nursing is both a science and a deeply human profession,” said Sigma President Liz Westcott, DCaM, MSc, DipMan, RNT, RN, FFNMRCSI. “Our members lead with expert knowledge and skill, and translate that expertise into impact through empathy, integrity, and a sustained commitment to improving lives.”

Nurses consistently extend their impact beyond traditional clinical roles. In hospitals and clinics, in universities and research institutions, and in boardrooms and communities, they support patients through complex and often challenging moments, combining clinical expertise with clear communication, critical thinking, and compassion.

Each day, nurses go beyond physical care, supporting the emotional and mental well-being of those they serve, while also educating future nurses, conducting research that advances evidence-based practice, influencing health policy, and leading initiatives that improve systems of care.

“At Sigma, we see the full power of nursing,” said Sigma Chief Executive Officer Lucas M. Davis, MEd, CAE. “It’s the knowledge that drives better outcomes, and the human connection that makes those outcomes meaningful. Nurses bring both, and that’s worth celebrating in a big way. That balance is essential to advancing care.”

Throughout Nurses Week, Sigma will highlight nursing impact, showcase the many ways nurses are advancing healthcare, and create opportunities for the community to recognize and celebrate themselves and their colleagues.

This Nurses Week, Sigma celebrates nurses as highly skilled professionals and compassionate caregivers, educators, researchers, and entrepreneurs—leaders who continue to strengthen healthcare and improve health for people and communities worldwide.
