Moving Sigma Forward: Leading Together (April 2026)

As a Sigma member, this is your update—a transparent look at where we are focusing our time, energy, and resources, and why it matters to you.

This month reflects the kind of progress we are committed to making—focused, intentional, and centered on what matters most to our members.

Thank you to everyone who attended, connected, presented, and volunteered at Sigma’s Creating Healthy Work Environments conference in Washington, DC. Your energy, insight, and commitment to one another are what make this community extraordinary. Every time we gather with Sigma members and nurse leaders, we are reminded of the power of this global network, and this event was no exception.

In the days leading up to Creating Healthy Work Environments, the Sigma Board of Directors met in person alongside our Regional Coordinators—an important opportunity to align, listen, and move our work forward together. View the full summary in Board Matters.

Following the conference, President Liz Westcott spent time with Region 12 chapters at Johns Hopkins School of Nursing and The George Washington University—connecting directly with members and leaders. From Lead Together to Sigma Forward, these conversations are shaping what's next for Sigma and the profession.

Amplifying the voice of nursing on the global stage

This past month also demonstrated what advocacy looks like in action.

Sigma UN Youth Representative Amy Staley represented our community at the United Nations’ 70th Commission on the Status of Women, joining colleagues from the International Council of Nurses (ICN) and the Society of Nurse Scientists, Innovators, Entrepreneurs & Leaders (SONSIEL). Together, they addressed violence in the workplace as a gendered crisis impacting nurses worldwide.

We are proud of the clarity Amy brought to the global stage. And the next voice shaping global healthcare could be yours. Applications are open until 22 April for the Global Advocacy Virtual Mini Academy, a six-week experience designed to equip nurses to influence policy and drive meaningful change.

Listening—and acting—on what matters most
Sigma Forward calls us to remain deeply relevant to you at every stage of your career. We’ve heard your feedback, and we are acting on it.

We’ve partnered with a leading agency to better understand why members join Sigma—and just as importantly, why they stay. The first phase of this work is complete and is already shaping how we think about engagement, value, and experience.

We are also moving forward with initiatives that respond directly to nurses’ needs through programs like the recently launched Disaster to Recovery: Prioritizing Nurse Wellbeing online course. Created in collaboration with Johnson & Johnson and with additional support from the J&J Foundation, this interactive learning experience equips nurses with real-world techniques, peer support models, and recovery strategies that extend beyond the crisis itself. Any nurse can register for this free, self-paced course.

Investing in our future: The Center for Nursing Scholarship
Since its founding, Sigma has adapted to meet the needs of its growing global community, including establishing its headquarters building (the Center for Nursing Scholarship) in the 1990s on the Indiana University campus. With the current land lease expiring in 2049 and no option to renew, Sigma is taking a deliberate, data-driven approach to determine the best path forward. A Board-led task force is guiding this effort to ensure future decisions strengthen Sigma’s mission and prioritize investment in programs, scholarships, leadership, and member experience.

Strengthening connections across the profession
At the end of March, Sigma staff and volunteers connected with nurse leaders from around the world at both the AACN Deans Meeting and the AONL Inspiring Leaders Conference. And in just a few days, Sigma staff will be traveling to Houston for the National Student Nurses Association Annual Convention. These conversations matter. They help ensure Sigma remains aligned with the evolving needs of the profession and positioned as a partner in advancing nursing leadership globally.

With gratitude
Everything we’ve shared in this update is made possible by you—your leadership, your scholarship, your service, and your commitment to our global community.

Thank you for the trust you place in Sigma. We are committed to earning it—every day.

Stay connected. Stay engaged. And keep leading, together.

With appreciation,

Liz Westcott, DCM, MSc, DipMan, RNT, RN, FFNMRCSI, President and Lucas M. Davis, MEd, CAE, Chief Executive Officer.
