New Sigma book uses unfolding case studies to help nursing students prepare for NCLEX

Unfolding Health Assessment Case Studies for the Student Nurse is a practical, straightforward study tool for health assessment courses and the NCLEX.

Early praise for Unfolding Health Assessment Case Studies for the Student Nurse:

“This book is a must-have resource for health assessment educators and their students. Utilizing this text, students will be challenged to apply health assessment concepts and develop important critical-thinking skills. The use of unfolding case studies with NCLEX-style practice questions is extremely useful and can be effective both inside and outside the classroom. This will be a well-loved and dog-eared text on many a bookshelf for years to come.”

–Maryanne Davidson, DNSc, APRN, CPNP
Dean, St. Vincent's College Sacred Heart University

Cover for Unfolding Health Assessment Case Studies for the Student NurseINDIANAPOLIS—Critical thinking can mean the difference between keeping a patient safe or putting a patient in harm’s way. In this new title from Sigma Nursing, authors Kristi Maynard and Andrea Adimando fill a gap in health assessment education that will help teach student nurses how to evaluate their patients using unfolding case studies that require the student to think critically every step of the way.

Unfolding Health Assessment Case Studies for the Student Nurse is a practical, straightforward study tool for health assessment courses and the NCLEX. Where traditional case studies present all the information up front and the patient’s status is predetermined, an unfolding case study evolves as the student reads through the case. This more closely mirrors the real-life situations students will find themselves in when they enter the profession. This book will not only enhance health assessment knowledge and skills, it will increase a student’s comfort level with analyzing patient scenarios and provide opportunities to practice and apply course material. Each chapter concludes with a worksheet to self-evaluate as well as NCLEX-style questions.

“When COVID-19 hit and we were forced to move our curriculum online, I saw peers scrambling to find quality cases to use include the rigor of their online classes. Unfolding cases were sought in particular because of their complexity and interactive format,” said author Kristi Maynard. “I believe this will be a continued trend in nursing education as more programs move online and clinical sites are limited.”
