As a Sigma member, this is your monthly update—a transparent look at where we are focusing our time, energy, and resources, and why it matters to you.

April was defined by progress—focused and intentional. It helped move us forward in ways that matter to you and the global nursing community we serve together. And you can see that progress in the moments we share.

Recently, we connected with members (and future members) at the American Organization for Nursing Leadership and National Student Nurses’ Association annual conferences. We had important conversations and made real connections. These gatherings are powerful reminders that the future of nursing isn’t distant. It’s already taking shape through leaders at every level. 

Those conversations matter. They help ensure we remain focused on what you need throughout every stage of your career.

Our amazing volunteers reflect that same sense of shared responsibility. 

From 20-24 April, we observed Volunteer Week. It was a week to reflect and acknowledge our dedicated volunteers who lead, serve, and strengthen Sigma at every level. Volunteerism is central to how we operate. It shapes our governance. It extends our reach. And it reinforces the idea that leadership in Sigma is both accessible and transformative. 

Because of you, Sigma continues to grow as a global force for nursing excellence powered not just by numbers, but by passion, purpose, and people who care deeply about making a difference. But our celebration doesn’t end there. The United Nations has declared 2026 to be International Volunteer Year—a call to organizations like ours to further elevate our volunteers, both formal and informal, local and global.

We are preparing to meet that moment and intentionally share your stories and contributions throughout the year. Share how you’ve impacted your community here.

In addition to the ongoing work of our task forces on membership, chapters, and regions, the Leadership Succession Committee met with current and former leaders this month to better define the experiences, expectations, skills, and qualifications that support effective governance. 

Our goal is straightforward: when you are ready to lead, Sigma is ready to support that next step.

That same focus on clarity and alignment continues within our staff. 

In mid-April, Sigma staff came together at our headquarters for our third IGNITE retreat. This is an important opportunity, rooted in Sigma Forward's priorities, to ensure our internal work reflects the priorities we have set as an organization. 

Across teams, we are strengthening collaboration, challenging assumptions, and refining how we deliver value to you.

At the global level, Sigma’s voice continues to expand through the work of our United Nations liaisons and youth representatives. Their engagement ensures nursing perspectives are heard in key international conversations. We encourage you to take a moment to watch UN Liaison Sanele Lukhele speaking at the 59th Commission on Population and Development, urging member states to address the critical shortage of nurses and midwives.

May offers an opportunity to pause and recognize the impact behind all this work. 

Nurses Week and International Nurses Day are times to recognize how nurses demonstrate leadership in action, even in times of uncertainty. Your work extends beyond a job description. You bring clarity, confidence, and care to every situation. 

Nursing lies at the intersection of clinical excellence and genuine human connection, and this year’s theme—“where skill meets heart”—captures that truth beautifully. We celebrate you: highly skilled professionals and compassionate caregivers. Your leadership strengthens healthcare and improves health for people and communities worldwide.

Later this month, Sigma staff will be at the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses National Teaching Institute & Critical Care Exposition (19-20 May). We hope to connect with you there.

Through consistent progress, shared leadership, and a clear focus on the future, we are building together.
