As we approach the halfway point of 2025, I’m filled with gratitude and excitement reflecting on the past month filled with recognition, inspiration, and continued transformation of the nursing profession.
In May, we proudly celebrated Nurses Week with the theme, Every moment, every nurse. From bedside to boardroom, community health to critical care, our nurses exemplify excellence, compassion, and resilience. It was uplifting to see the heartfelt messages, social posts, and celebrations taking place throughout Sigma and beyond.
On Monday, 12 May, we joined the global nursing community celebrating International Nurses Day, a date that honors the birth of Florence Nightingale and serves as a reminder of the essential role nurses play in healthcare worldwide. I particularly want to recognize the nurses on the Sigma staff, International Board of Directors, committee members, regional coordinators, and volunteer chapter leaders worldwide. Your dedication, innovation, and compassion make an enduring difference—not just within Sigma, but throughout the global healthcare community. I’m honored to celebrate your impact and legacy.
Also on International Nurses Day, the World Health Organization released the State of the World’s Nursing 2025 Report, which provides the most comprehensive and up-to-date analysis of the global nursing workforce. I am proud to note that two of Sigma's United Nations Liaisons, Siobhan O'Connor and Charlotte McArdle, contributed to this report.
Later in May, several staff members and I attended the National Teaching Institute and Critical Care Exposition (NTI) in New Orleans, which brought together thousands of nurses and leaders in critical care in a vibrant environment of learning, collaboration, and innovation. I was inspired by the opportunity to connect with so many dedicated professionals and witness firsthand the remarkable advancements nurses are driving in clinical practice and patient care.
As we continue to advance our mission and elevate the voice of nursing, I am looking forward to the International Council of Nurses (ICN) Congress in Helsinki, Finland, and two of Sigma's most impactful global gatherings—the 36th International Nursing Research Congress and the 48th Biennial Convention.
Sigma’s congress offers an unparalleled opportunity to engage with more than 800 nurse researchers and scholars from around the world, and I am excited about the breadth and depth of research that will be shared by these colleagues shaping the future of nursing science.
In November, the 48th Biennial Convention will bring together nurse leaders, clinicians, educators, and advocates for a celebration of leadership, excellence, and global impact. The convention is a time to reflect on our progress, recognize outstanding achievements, and explore new pathways for growth and collaboration within the profession, including the election of new international leadership. I look forward to seeing many of you there as we continue to lead, learn, and grow—together.
As always, I am truly grateful for your incredible work. Looking ahead, I’m energized by the path before us as we continue to elevate and advance the nursing profession.
With gratitude,
Lucas M. Davis, MEd, CAE
