Past STTI President Carol Picard Passes Away

Carol PicardCarol Picard, PhD, RN, CS, past president (2005-2007) of the  Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) and a professor emeritus of nursing at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, passed away 14 February 2016. Dr. Picard was past president of the International Association for Human Caring, received the Clara Barton Humanitarian Award from Emmanuel College in 2006, and was awarded the Living Legend Award from the Massachusetts Registered Nurses Association in 2008.

Picard was a clinical specialist in psychiatric nursing with a particular interest in chronic mental illness and quality of life. She had presented papers and keynote addresses nationally and internationally on excellence in nursing as evidence-based, theory-guided reflective practice. As a poet and a dancer, she also worked to bring the arts to the arena of healing for patients and students.

“I was deeply saddened to hear of Carol’s passing. She was an exceptional nurse and an inspiration to me and so many others. My heart goes out to her husband, Denis, and her children, Jeff and Alison. I ask that you keep her family and many friends in your thoughts at this difficult time,” said STTI President Cathy Catrambone, PhD, RN, FAAN.
