Publishing Pre-Conference

The Publishing Process for Nurses: Dissemination as a Skill

Friday, 10 November 2023

1:00-4:00 p.m. (1300-1600)

Thousands of oral and poster presentations are presented at professional conferences every year, but the majority never result in published papers. Publishing is necessary in order to disseminate knowledge and important work to a larger audience and scale findings from research and evidence-based quality improvement projects to real world clinical and academic settings. Publishing also is important for one’s professional career.

Barriers to writing papers for publication include multiple competing priorities, lack of confidence in one’s own writing skills, and perceived insufficient time to devote to the writing process. Participating in writing groups, regularly blocking time, and having a mentor can lead to success in writing.

This intensive workshop will first highlight key strategies for turning oral and poster presentations into high quality papers for journal submission. Barriers and facilitators to writing will be discussed, along with recommendations on action tactics to expedite the writing process. Tips on successful publication will be offered. Participants will then break into small writing groups and receive feedback on their manuscript ideas and drafts of papers from seasoned editors and authors. The outcome of this workshop for participants will be progress toward submission of a quality paper for publication.
