Editors of Worldviews on Evidence-based Nursing and Journal of Nursing Scholarship

Thousands of oral and poster presentations are presented at professional conferences every year, but the majority never result in published papers. Publishing is necessary in order to disseminate knowledge and important work to a larger audience and scale findings from research and evidence-based quality improvement projects to real world clinical and academic settings. Publishing also is important for one’s professional career. Barriers to writing papers for publication include multiple competing priorities, lack of confidence in one’s own writing skills, and perceived insufficient time to devote to the writing process. Facilitators that support success in writing include regularly blocked time, having a mentor, and participation in writing groups.

This intensive workshop will first highlight key strategies for turning oral and poster presentations into high quality papers for journal submission. Barriers and facilitators to writing will be discussed along with recommendations on action tactics to expedite the writing process. Tips on successful publication will be offered. Participants will then break into small writing groups and receive feedback on their manuscript ideas and drafts of papers from Sigma editors and seasoned authors. The outcome of this workshop for participants will be progress toward submission of a quality paper for publication. Participants are encouraged to bring beginning or more developed drafts of a paper with them to the workshop so that tailored advice can be offered to accelerate manuscript submission and successful publication.

Note: To attend the Publications Workshop, you must also attend at least one day of congress, if not the full conference.
