Dues assistance provided to more than 240 members

Thanks to you, more than US $10,000 was awarded in membership dues subsidies during the first three quarters of the fiscal year ending 30 June 2021. These subsidies ensure nursing students and existing members facing financial hardships can continue to receive the benefits Sigma offers.

“I would like to express my gratitude to the donors who allowed me to receive the subsidy to reduce my initiation and membership fees. I believe Sigma will be a great way for me to become more involved and connected with the nursing community, even while I am still a student. Without this subsidy, I am not sure I would have been able to join Sigma this year, so thank you from the bottom of my heart!”

2020-2021 Small Research Grant Recipients Announced

The 2020-2021 Small Research Grant recipients have been selected. Nurses will receive funding in June 2021 for studies that focus on addressing healthcare disparities to improve healthcare everywhere. These grants are awarded annually thanks to donations designated research.

“Research is all about the future and new possibilities. My research is going to incorporate culturally relevant frameworks to address stress and cardiovascular health within rural African American women who experience a multitude of disparities and disadvantages. By your amazing donations I am able to do this work and launch a career as a nurse scientist to continue on this path of addressing health disparities in this field."

The Dorothy Brooten Permanent Fund Established

Dr. Brooten established the Dorothy Brooten Permanent Fund to award a small nursing research grant because she knows small grants are essential in developing science and nurse scientists. In her words, “These grants provide direction for further research, provide investigators with confidence that others believe in their research, and provide opportunities to pilot methods, problem-solve hurdles, develop teams, work with institutional review boards, and publish and present study results.”
